INTERVIEW: HALLOWEEN

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I only spent a few hours at the airport there a couple of years ago, but the city has been well-known for its rich and lively indie music scene. Is this still true in 2024? Do you feel like you’re a part of the local scene?

HALLOWEEN: The only person in our band that’s from Philly is our bassist, the community here is amazing and although I’m not originally from here it sure feels like it. I feel the music scene here is unique because people really look out for authenticity, instead of just hype and social status.

MOTEL VOID: Your first album was recorded at Studio North in Philly, but your new single was self-recorded. Why did you decide to change this approach? Could you describe the writing and recording process behind ‘Fate and Despair’? Will it be part of your new album?

HALLOWEEN: This song is actually just a standalone single. I think we just ended up recording this one from home because financially it made more sense, studio north is an incredible place, and we will definitely be making music there in the future.

MOTEL VOID: You released your new single on cassette tape. Is this your favorite format? Do you collect tapes? And do you have any favorite cassette tape labels?

HALLOWEEN: I absolutely love cassette tapes, I like the fidelity, and I love how unique they feel. I have a very large collection of cassette tapes, and for cassette tape labels I would say julias war, Smoking Room, Tennant recordings, rope bridge, roachleg And so many more

MOTEL VOID: You’re about to embark on a Summer Tour 2024, playing for example in Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio… You toured a lot last autumn as well, playing 20 shows (East Coast, West Coast, Texas…). How hard is it to book such a long tour in the US? And would you like to come to Europe in the near future as well?

HALLOWEEN: We are actually routing a European tour currently. That will be in October, if you want to help us with the show, feel free to hit me up lol, I’ve been touring for over a decade so for me it’s a bit easy considering all the people in friendships, I’ve made along the way.

MOTEL VOID: At the moment, who or what is inspiring you the most? Also, I must ask: is Halloween – that 1978 horror movie – your favorite film?

HALLOWEEN: I think we just thought the name sounded really cool. Grim, a Japanese noise artist that started in the late 80s is probably one of my biggest inspirations currently, aesthetically and musically. As for my band members, I think we all have such different inspirations, but we collaborate them to create this band
