“For fans of Grouper, Mount Eerie and Mazzy Star… Antwerp-based folk noir duo Imaginary Sister creates silhouettes of songs by combining minimal arrangements and a softly rustling voice?” That’s what I’ve read about the Belgium duo in their Spotify bio and I could not agree more. I love their minimalist approach that’s very similar to Phil Elverum and Grouper – and I would like to underline that this minimalist type of music is also very hard to create. I mean, it’s very hard to create good, compelling songs in this genre, where you use only a few instruments (sometimes only one!), your voice and nothing else… It often happens that such songs become monotonous and boring quite quickly. But that’s not the case with Imaginary Sister, they simply have your full attention from the beginning till the last second.
(I also love the video that sort of looks like an album cover.)
