Minivanminivan is a Californian lo-fi project of Drake Tillman (I hope I didn’t get the name wrong!) and Idols at Arm’s Length is a track of minivanminivan’s (btw I love the name) debut album called drew that was dedicated to his younger brother who died last year at the age of 26.
And it is a true lo-fi gem. The song has very Pavement/Silver Jews vibes to me. “All my favorite singers couldn’t sing,” sings David Berman on We Are Real and after hearing Idols at Arm’s Length, this sentence came to my mind. I mean, Minivanminivan can sing, but it’s not that type of school trained singing, it’s more of a raw street type singing that I love so much.
The song has beautiful rough production, captivating melodies and somehow casual, yet emotive vocal. “You were the best person I have ever known and the only person I shared my music with for a long time,” says minivanminivan about his new tracks. It’s very sad to hear about passing of his brother, but I’m happy that he managed to come out with these beautiful songs that might help others with their grief.
