Songs we love: elison – Covered me

Des Moines, Iowa indie rock/shoegaze/dream pop duo, Elison is Marissa Kephart, lead singer and guitarist, and Scott Yoshimura (The Envy Corps, Canby), producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist. The duo formed after Scott produced Marissa’s first-ever song, Meet Me Halfway in the summer of 2021. During that time they found they shared a love for much of the same late 90s and early 2000s indie rock bands.

I really like that late 90s indie influence they have – Covered me reminds me of one of my favorite artists S (Jenn Champion from Carissa’s Weird). It’s just simple, raw yet accessible, emotive and still very melodic…

I think this track spoke to me even more because of its meaning: “The song is about coming to the realization that, while in a relationship with a narcissist, you don’t really know the person you’re with. That person’s desire to be in the spotlight eclipses all else, even has you questioning yourself,” explains the band.
