Mylo Choy finds comfort in the spaces between things. As a mixed-race and non-binary person, moving between worlds feels like home to them. Born and raised in Wisconsin, they also developed a strong connection to Hawai’i, where their mother is from. For over 10 years they worked in outdoor education, living and working in many places including Maine and Hawai’i, but mostly between the woods of Upstate New York and New York City.
The first thing that caught my attention when I heard their new single The River Song (well, actually before that) was the cover, which offers really calm, serene atmosphere. The song itself is similarly beautiful. Most of the bedroom pop that I have heard in recent years has rather positive, chill atmosphere, but The River Song by Mylo Choy is somehow different. It carries different kind of emotion, it’s somehow peaceful and relaxing, but melancholic and sad at the same time. I also love their vocal, which sounds very human, with all its flaws and imperfections… my favorite type of vocal:)
