Holding Hour (formerly know as Elison) is a duo from Des Moines, Iowa. It consists of Marissa Kephart, lead singer and guitarist, and Scott Yoshimura (The Envy Corps, Canby), producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist. The duo formed after Scott produced Marissa’s first-ever song, Meet Me Halfway, in the summer of 2021. During that time they found they shared a love for much of the same late 90s and early 2000s indie rock bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Yo La Tengo and Death Cab for Cutie.
After the first listen, Fruit Flies seemed to me as sort of inconspicuous song, benefiting from a perfect production that evokes the late 90s, while also sounding fresh. What I like the most about the track is the captivating vocal, especially the last minute of the song is just perfect and you have to play it on repeat (that catchy guitar is great as well). I really enjoy the sound of the drums as well, it reminds me of my favourite band The National. The sound of the drums here is so good that I can’t really tell if it’s automatic or live drums:) I would rather guess that the automatic ones. Anyway, the sound is 5/5!
