Songs we love: Alex Gardner – Strange Designs

When someone mentions names like Silver Jews and Magnetic Fields as their favorite musicians, I know that their music won’t be bad. Uninteresting, a bit dull, maybe. But in most cases, the music is actually pretty good and that’s the case with Alex Gardner as well.

Gardner is a songwriter and guitarist living in Los Angeles. Starting in 2007, he has self-released a string of albums, and been involved in music scenes in Seattle and Los Angeles.

Strange Designs is his newest single and it has extremely relaxed, chill atmosphere, especially instrumentally. The instrumental part of the track reminds me with its warmth of the Magnetic Fields production a lot. But the overall feeling is slightly more melancholic (and I like that), mainly thanks to the vocals: they’re soft, modest and a bit sad as well.

Gardner’s voice is accompanied by Lauren Slusser (I hope I got this right) and their voices sound really beautiful together. Highly recommended!
