INTERVIEW: Eversame

Eversame is a 4 piece band based in Žilina, Slovakia.

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Ĺ˝ilina, Slovakia. How would you describe the current music scene there?

Eversame: A lot of local bands started playing around the same time as we did, so we all kind of built our own underground scene. There are a lot of different genres in our local scene – different kinds of metal, indie, alt, rap, or electronic music. Our local scene is very young. Some of the artists aren’t even 18 yet. Most of the bands are also very friendly, so it’s a nice and welcoming scene, everyone helps each other.

MOTEL VOID: You started as a grunge trio. Who are your favorite grunge artists?

Eversame: Nirvana is probably the band that got us all into grunge music. We of course like the most popular bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, or Silverchair, but we also love some let’s say “less popular” bands, such as The Melvins, TAD, Green River, and Radish.

MOTEL VOID: In your music, you combine elements of jazz, shoegaze, indie rock, hip-hop, blues, midwest emo, slowcore, math rock, and a lot more… I saw your Black Country, New Road cover on YouTube, they’re well known for mixing genres as well. Did they influence your music?

Eversame: In some way, they did, since we listen to them a lot. Matthew (our guitarist) even bought a Telecaster because Isaac had one. We also like their unusual compositions and mixing riffs that you wouldn’t typically put together.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released your first album Tell Me Where the Flowers Are on tape via Start-track. Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of the album?

Eversame: We started writing all the songs in July 2022 when Pauline joined the band. The first song we worked on was “warm flower sided road”. The process was mostly the same in all of the songs. Matthew, our guitarist, came up with a riff and we jammed around it. We tried a lot of different things with “consolation.”, even putting a whistle in it, but adding that big chorus at the end of the song with all the cymbals and 2 guitars seemed to work the best. The recording process was a lot easier than we thought. We recorded the instruments in 3 days. Starting with drums, then the bass, and then the guitars. The vocals were done in 2 days. All of the instruments were recorded in a theatre with a lot of mics in the room so it created that deep, big sound.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for the rest of 2023? Any live shows ahead?

Eversame: We are playing a festival in Bratislava called Mýšačka fest. We also have a show in Žilina with a band from Iceland called Gróa and another one with the band Waterbased. We’re also playing a showcase concert in Trenčín that’s partnered with Pohoda festival called Garáž Trenčín. We are also focusing on writing new songs for our second album.
