1) You’re from Melbourne, Australia. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
SLUGGO: I think the music scene in Melbourne is always thriving. There are many live music venues and willing bands doing whatever they want because there is a space for it. As far as I am concerned, I am not really a part of the music scene here. it’s quite click-y and I feel like I have no time for the interpersonal bullshit of pretending to like every shoe-gaze band out there or fight for spots on bills. I will make my way in, on my own path. I am happy doing what I am doing, and I mainly do it for myself.
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?
SLUGGO: Favourite local artists are probably Clavin Clone, The Applicant, Freeds, Classroom and from back in the day TISM. The Curtin is always good, as well as the forum. I have had the pleasure of seeing a few great gigs at The Croxton Band Room which is great and always proves to be more intimate than you think.
MOTEL VOID: Your biggest music influences right now?
SLUGGO: Right now my biggest influences are John Cale, Brian Eno, Deerhoof and Country Teasers. Anyone who is kind of pop and rock adjacent but takes it to a strange place at the same time.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your new EP ‘Sluggish Start’?
SLUGGO: Sluggish Start was recorded in my room. I struggle with sleep so there is endless time for me to be writing. My process is pretty loose too. I will just sit and play around on my acoustic guitar, and if i hear anything I like I will work from there. At that point I try to flesh it out with bass and drums and electric guitar. Lyrically, I just loop whatever I have recorded and legitimately start singing to see if I can land on a melody. Once I am there, it’s the painstaking writing phase. I wrote all of these songs in about 2 weeks though, so I move quickly which is exactly what sluggo is about. No standing around debating whether or not something can be done again and again. Move on, release music. No fuss, no wait, no worries, mate.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans and goals for the rest of the year?
SLUGGO: I have 2 more releases planned (i move quick) for the next 6 months. War on Slugs and Slug on Slug. The latter will see me move away from total lowfi annihilation but still maintains the sludge. And I reckon there’s a hot chance there will be gig coming soon. With 4 releases already this year, it may be time for my 1 Year Eras Tour. Who knows though, could be anything.
