MOTEL VOID: You’re from Winnipeg, Canada. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re a part of it?
TIRED COSSACK: Winnipeg probably has the most underrated music scene in Canada. We’re in the middle of nowhere, where it’s frigid half the year. There are no other major cities around us for at least 8 hours. So it’s always been that if you want to make something, you have to do it yourself. I think this attitude translates into all the fantastic music that comes out of here.
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?
TIRED COSSACK: Of course. Warming, Tinge, Mulligrub, Anthony OKS, Amos the Kid, Begonia, and Fold Paper are some of my favs right now.
MOTEL VOID: Your biggest music influences are Neil Young and The Cure. Could you name your most favorite albums/songs by them?
TIRED COSSACK: It’s hard for me to single out a single release by Neil Young because he put like 5 records out a year. Honestly it’s all great. Love Harvest Moon. Also love “10:15 Saturday Night” by the Cure. So nice.
MOTEL VOID: ‘Cowboy’ is your new single and I really love the song, it’s fantastic. Will it be a part of your new album?
TIRED COSSACK: Thanks! Definitely. Really excited to put the whole thing out soon. October 6 to be exact.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about your recording and writing process?
TIRED COSSACK: I record everything on my own at first. Then when it’s time to re-track important parts I meet up with my friend/co-producer Donavan Ostapowich and we make a plan. Tracked drums in a small studio in Winnipeg call House of Wonderss (thanks Adam), and got my live drummer Jony to track everything.
I love solo recording though because I can take all the time I want to really get lost in a song to fixate on the smallest detail without wasting anyone else’s time. Also I can fuck up as many times as I want hahaha.
