MOTEL VOID: You’re from Hamburg, Germany. How would you describe the current music scene there? Is there a strong ‘shoegaze/dream pop’ scene in Germany?
ROLF (FROM THE FIRST ELOI): Yes, there are a lot of shoegaze influenced bands around Germany, seems like dream pop and shoegaze are still on the rise since the 2000s here… I don’t know the numbers, but a lot of international shoegaze bands are always coming here, so there is a need for this kind of music…
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?
ROLF (FROM THE FIRST ELOI): We have a lot of cool venues here in Hamburg, like Hafenklang, Molotow, and many more. All the cool bands from all over the world play here. But Yeah, Hamburg is a melting pot, my father saw the Beatles here in the sixties… My favorite artists here are maybe Jaguwar from Berlin, Virginia Planes from Heidelberg…
MOTEL VOID: Your influences are shoegaze ‘veterans’ my bloody valentine and Slowdive. But also e.g. DIIV. Who is the biggest inspiration for you at the moment?
ROLF (FROM THE FIRST ELOI): Yeah, I would say, „Nothing“ is always on top of our playlists, we like the postcore/grunge sound, the massive drums, and sure, the melodies… but well, yeah, we are different, the vocals are much more from the shoegaze veterans…
MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a new single Last Days of Summer. What was the writing and recording process behind this track?
ROLF (FROM THE FIRST ELOI): As usual, I experimented with some chords and melody fragments. After that Enid took a look and we developed the final melody and the mood and theme for the song together… This one was a fast one, after a short demo, we instantly began the recording, because we felt there was one song missing on the planned Ep. And as it turned out, it felt well placed for us in there. And if you need more specific guitar-nerd information, I usually record the guitars with my Marshall and Fender amp, different pedals, like the Oceans 111 and the OCD. The vocals in this song are build from 5 tracks mixed together…
MOTEL VOID: Your plans and goals for the rest of the year?
ROLF (FROM THE FIRST ELOI): Working on new songs, experimenting with sounds and pedals as usual. And as always, trying to do stuff that we really like… and keep on rehearsing for some live-shows next year, maybe…
