NEW YORK BAND TRINKET CHANNEL 80S UK JANGLE POP ON THEIR SARAH RECORDS INSPIRED SINGLE ‘FIGURE SKATER’
MOTEL VOID: You’re from New York. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
TRINKET: We’re based here in Brooklyn, NY! The scene here in New York definitely feels exciting right now- lots of bands I’ve seen play shows for a few years now are starting to take off and that’s really exciting to see! I would describe the scene here right now as community based- lots of people working together to create a sound and bands bouncing inspiration back and forth between each other to amplify each other. Trinket is a really new band, we just played our first show about a year ago to the day. One of the coolest feelings I’ve felt since moving to New York 7 years ago has started happening recently, which is the feeling of going to a show alone at a local venue and knowing I’ll probably run into someone from another band I know, or a friend. That definitely feels like being part of a scene to me! Every time we play a show with a band, we try to stay in touch with them, play other shows with them, and cheer them on.
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?
TRINKET: Some favorites of the band are Raavi, Nara’s Room, S.C.A.B, (all of whom are functioning members of our band who have their own groups!) Other favorites and friends are Foyer Red, Big Dumb Baby, Hotline TNT, Starcleaner Reunion, And Thanks for Coming. Our favorite venue is Trans Pecos in Queens. The people who run the space are great to work with.

MOTEL VOID: Your biggest music influences right now are for example Alvvays and Heavenly. Their best record for you?
TRINKET: The band was learning the latest single, Figure Skater, right around the time “Blue Rev” by Alvvays came out- that record is really special to me. It balances catchiness and warmth with discomfort and uncertainty, sweetness with distortion. “Atta Girl” by Heavenly is another favorite of ours! The playfulness and undone-ness of it really informs how we like to play live. Heavenly was also part of a scene in 1980’s-90’s UK that the band is really obsessed with, Sarah Records. That was a network of bands that really carved a distinct style and sound into indie music that will be around forever.
MOTEL VOID: You’re from NY, but you release on London independent label Sad Club Records. How did this cooperation happen?. And could you recommend your favorite artists from this label?
TRINKET: We found out about Sad Club through another band located in NYC that had signed to them, and also wanted to work with a label that comes from a DIY start. Upon meeting with Tallulah, who runs the label, we realized we had a lot of mutual music loves in common – particularly Sarah Records! Seeing that our influences were so understood made us feel like this would be the perfect home for this release. Also so fitting to be represented over in the UK where so much of the music we love comes from! We love our fellow New Yorkers Kierst, and have really been loving Symbol Soup lately too.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of ‘Figure Skater’?
TRINKET: Figure Skater was written in a chunk of time where I was writing a lot of music last fall and winter. I had just gotten let go from an office job that was really soul sucking, and was putting a lot of my spare energy into the band to carve out some meaning in my life. There’s a lot of existential dread in this song (maybe too much? hahah). We tracked the song live, so you’re essentially hearing it as a live performance. Our friend Eamon Ford mixed and engineered this for us over the span of a few chilly days in Queens, NY. There were a lot of laughs during the process. We wanted to make it feel really straightforward, just the song at its best without a lot of bells and whistles.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans and goals for the rest of the year?
TRINKET: We’ve got a couple shows in the books to round out the year here in New York- I’d love to write a couple more songs, and perhaps share another song before the year is out 🙂
