MOTEL VOID: You’re based in NY/LA. How does this kind of cooperation work?
HOUNDSTEETH: It’s hard to be a long-distance band in terms of keeping up momentum while we’re all in different places, but we try to make the most of our time when we’re together. Our songwriting process thus far has involved writing songs separately and then arranging them together. Becoming long-distance actually didn’t hinder the writing process too much, but the logistics end of things has definitely felt like an obstacle course of sorts. Also, as a band of real buds, being far away from each other is a bummer, but we tend to keep the vibes silly and light hearted both from afar and when we reunite.
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?
GRACE: Turbo World, Drobakid, Or Best Offer (recently relocated to chicago), Pleaser, Stice, Salt, Noble Beast, Itch Princess, Sweet Baby Jesus
JOLEE: I’ll name 3 artists I love in NYC and then 3 in LA! NYC – like a doll, birthday ass, and Dorée Gordon 😉 LA – Ko T.C., dingbat superminx, and harmony index
IZZY: Lip Critic, The Narcotix, Cohort B, Youbet – to name a few :))
(we all vibe with all these projects!!!)
There are so many venues in NYC, we’ve each/all had good times playing at lots of different spots around the city!
MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a beautiful new single ‘Rodeo’, could you tell us more about your upcoming album ‘Hold Your Horses’?
HOUNDSTEETH: Thanks! In retrospect, making another album was an ambition of ours but it didn’t feel like a priority. With the addition of Izzy since our first album, the past few years have been a steady exploration of understanding and communicating with each other’s musical instincts and interests, as we have a pretty wide range of those across the three of us. Hold Your Horses is a journey through where we intersect and depart from one another, sonically and lyrically. Themes of anxiety, friendship, and the complexities within day to day tasks are very present on the album. Though, we hope listeners can also tap into the fun we had recording it and the amount of experimentation that comes along with being a band with your best pals.
MOTEL VOID: Your biggest influences right now? Both musically and lyrically?
GRACE – ‘Sauna’ by Mount Eerie, JOBS, Mishio Ogawa, Richard Dawson, ‘Satekoso’ by Chakra, Or Best Offer, Luge, and the list goes on….
JOLEE – Charli XCX, Allegra Krieger, Luge, Fleetwood Mac, @ , Michael Hurley
IZZY – I’m kinda just eternally inspired/influenced by Clube Da Esquina, Jobim, my parents :)) (Maucha and Duduka), and honestly all of my friends and peers influence and inspire me with all the art they make.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans and goals for the rest of the year? (except for releasing a new record of course…)”
HOUNDSTEETH: We are a long distance band of busy 25 year olds with a combined list of like, 500 interests, haha. We have fun talking aspirations, but are in a place right now where we need to take things one step at a time. We’re currently on tour and have had lots of time to talk about our bands future! Once we finish up this tour and release the record, we have hopes to get together on either coast to get cookin on the next record. We would also love to continue touring! We’ve made our way around the northeast and some of the midwest but we’d love to go further south and hit the west coast at some point. If the opportunity to tour Europe were to arise… we definitely wouldn’t say no 😉
