INTERVIEW: SUFFER FOOLS

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Vancouver Island, Canada. How would you describe the current music scene there?

SUFFER FOOLS: The scene on Vancouver Island is quite varied, with pockets of creativity here and there. Lacking a major city, it’s pretty decentralized and a little anarchic. Nanaimo, Victoria, and Cumberland all have vibrant DIY scenes with a broad range of genres.

MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?

SUFFER FOOLS: Favourite local/regional artists include Devours, OfCosmos, Sonder, Avro, Bad State, Pranatricks, and Happy For You. Favourite venue is the Cumberland Masonic Hall.

MOTEL VOID: Your new single ‘almost beautiful’ is really fantastic, I love it. What was the writing and recording process behind this track?

SUFFER FOOLS: Thank you! The song started with the song title and basic concept. Like many musicians I keep a journal of song and lyic ideas, and some of these lyrics kept coming up for me, asking to be turned into a song. The song was recorded in a garage in Kamloops, BC called the Garage Mahal.

MOTEL VOID: Your biggest influences right now?

SUFFER FOOLS: Influences right now include trashy trap music, reverb pedals, and excessive guitar feedback.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans and goals for the rest of the year & 2024?

SUFFER FOOLS: Goals for 2023 & 2024 include releasing our sophomore album.
