MOTEL VOID: I couldn’t find much information about you on the internet. Where are you from? And how would you describe current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
CAM QUINN: I’m from Western Massachusetts! It’s a really beautiful place to live with an awesome local music scene. There’s tons of cool small venues and lots of amazing musicians out here, I’m definitely thankful to be here as an artist. I’ve historically been a pretty independent, work by myself type of artist, but I’m working my way into the scene here the longer I’m here (lived here for almost a year now).
MOTEL VOID: I really admire your guitar playing! Where did you learn to play like that?
CAM QUINN: Thank you! Guitar has been my primary musical medium since I started when I was a little kid, around 10 years old. I’m mostly self taught, and grew up with a lot of musician friends to play with. Took lessons for a short period of time, but mostly just to learn basic chords and riffs.
MOTEL VOID: I was a huge fan of your debut single Rolling in the Blues from 2021. Now you’ve released your debut EP ‘Highdive’. What changed during these 2-3 years?
CAM QUINN: Thanks! Lots has changed since then. I wrote that song at the beginning of my transition (going on 3 years now 🥳), I’ve moved to a different part of the state, made new friends, discovered new artists that inspire me, my writing/recording techniques have changed and grown. So much has changed! I feel like that is reflected in Highdive, and I hope other people see that too.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?
CAM QUINN: It tends to vary a lot. All of the songs on Highdive I wrote with just an acoustic guitar and notebook, then they evolved as I recorded them. They’re also quite vulnerable, and that state of vulnerability is essential to my songwriting. If I can’t go there, I usually can’t write a good song. As far as recording/producing, I’m still learning, but I recorded the whole EP with one SM-57 and a MIDI keyboard for drums.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?
CAM QUINN: Lots of plans! Im currently working on new material, as well as a heavier, more metal-infused side project, but mostly I’m planning on getting more into the live scene. I’ve never played in a band, and nothing beats playing with other people live, so I want to do more of that!
