MOTEL VOID: You’re based in Brooklyn, NY. How would you describe current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
TEASEA: It’s a Mecca of talent and different sub-communities. There’s always so much to tap into and most of it is open to each other. There definitely is some elitist energy around, but its also NY so its kind of expected? I’ve been around in the scene for bit now, having lived in BK for almost 7 years. teasea is sort of a newer concept, so I haven’t played this music out yet but I’m excited by the possibility! I’m also the second half of the band Ritual Talk and we used to play all the time. I’ve also drummed for a bunch of artists throughout the scene over the years. It’s always fun to play all different types of music and support incredible artists.
MOTEL VOID: You also co-run a label Ambient Pasta. Three releases that you could recommend to our readers?
TEASEA: Yes, I do! This is also a new baby run by my brother Dan Criblez who goes by his artist name Weeze, my roommate Mimmo and myself. In addition to being a label, Ambient Pasta is a creative, multi-sensory event and production company that also serves as a label. We put on intimate shows in our apartment, curated dinners scored by ambient music and serve homemade pasta, and put on public events at varies venues around the city showing an array of mediums. We actually just put out a single called “Running” by Panther Hollow who is my favorite guitar player. Please check out his music! We also released a record by the band Ackerman called “peace wise silence” which is also a dream because we love them very much. And then my band Ritual Talk put out our last effort on Ambient Pasta called “is it ever?”. It’s a psych-soul swirl of a ride haha.
MOTEL VOID: You’ve released two new singles recently, ‘Lips’ and ‘What If, Could Be’. Will they be part of your new record?
TEASEA: Yes, they will be! I’m still figuring out what is actually going to be on there. I’ve written a ton of material for this project and it’s a fun challenge to understand what exactly I want to say and curate together to make for a pleasurable and emotive listen. These songs are also incredibly vulnerable and my sort of landing moment as a solo songwriter so I’m trying my best to stay true and have fun while also move with a critical eye/ear.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?
TEASEA: So for these batch of songs, I wanted to evoke the sense of a live setting but in the studio kind of energy. So my process for most of these has been to write the song on guitar and play through the whole thing in a take and then proceed to do that on each instrument and have each element move with each other as the song progresses. It’s a pretty wacky but liberating process and mistakes end of staying in cause there isn’t much comping happening. Having made a ton of music and consume so much almost “perfect” sounding music, I wanted to go for a more raw process and commit to mistakes cause thats human.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?
TEASEA: I’d love to play this music live! And probably keep writing, maybe collaborate more? Form a pophaze punk band? Who knows 😉
