INTERVIEW: FRIENDS TIL BREAKFAST

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Connecticut, but moved to Oregon in 2017. Why did you move there? And do you like the music scene better in Oregon?

FRIENDS TIL BREAKFAST: I moved to Portland, OR on a whim back in 2017. I was on a roadtrip with some friends (who I later played in Nicholas Franchise with) and decided that Portland was a cool place to stop and settle in for a while. The music scene in Portland was amazing pre-covid. So many house shows and a really great community. Post-Covid it took a bit of a hit and was not as vibrant… but I believe it is coming back. I live in Brooklyn now and am really excited to involve myself in the local scene here!

MOTEL VOID: Your favorite local artists and venues?

FRIENDS TIL BREAKFAST: It will take me some time to navigate Brooklyn and discover my favorite local acts. But I can speak all day about Portland, OR.

Venues – Revolution Hall (my favorite), Mississippi Studios, Polaris Hall are all big winners for me. Doug Fir was the best small size venue on the west coast imo, but they have since moved locations.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a beautiful new single ‘Cable Ace’. Could you describe the process of writing and recording the song? Will it be part of your new album?

FRIENDS TIL BREAKFAST: Thank you very much for the Kudos on Cable Ace. I moved away from Oregon for multiple reasons. Ending a long-term relationship, leaving a job of 3.5 years were two, rather unfortunate, reasons. But I was also excited to start something new and live somewhere else. The combination of those life events brought out a new attitude for me, and that’s manifested itself in Cable Ace. This song will definitely be on the album!

MOTEL VOID: Who is your biggest inspiration right now?

FRIENDS TIL BREAKFAST: Live performance. I want my next live show to drive hard the whole time. Cable ace reflects this as the drum beat never gives up.

MOTEL VOID: How was your 2023 so far, musically, and what are your plans for 2024?

FRIENDS TIL BREAKFAST: 2023 was spent writing in my studio. No live performances, unfortunately. But I think I will really be on top of my game in 2024. I have so many songs that are ready to be recorded and produced, it’s all about finding the right time to do it. Really excited to get this album underway.
