INTERVIEW: SASHA & THE BEAR

MOTEL VOID: You formed in Brooklyn, NY, but you wrote music together in Scandinavia, in Madrid… where do you live and create now?

SASHA & THE BEAR: I (Dov) am based in Brooklyn, NY, while Sasha moved to Israel a few years ago. To nurture our artistic bond and friendship, we’ve chosen to convene at various locations every few months, often immersing ourselves in nature, which consistently sparks inspiration for both of us.

MOTEL VOID: I love that melancholic mood in your music. Reminds me of Sylvan Esso a bit.Who is your biggest inspiration right now?

SASHA & THE BEAR: It’s constantly evolving, but these days, I find myself drawn to Jadu Heart, Big Red Machine, Beach House, and more. While my other projects predominantly delve into electronic and R&B genres, with Sasha & The Bear, I have the opportunity to showcase my indie “side” as an artist.

MOTEL VOID: ‘Miss it. Repeat’ is your new single, will it be part of your new record as well?

SASHA & THE BEAR: Absolutely! It’s the final single from our debut EP scheduled for release on December 22nd. Though it took us a moment to get here, we’re now planning to release music more frequently.

MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?

SASHA & THE BEAR: we usually go to nature and talk about life. we bring very basic equipment with us, to keep things simple and creative. we talk about our personal life and that inspires us to start somewhere. then i pick up my guitar and usually it naturally progresses from there. 2 years ago i lost my mom and that really effected every part of my life so most of the songs in the EP revolve around themes of loss and grief, among others. Sasha and I share our life experiences, providing fertile ground for our music to take shape.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?

SASHA & THE BEAR: Our goal is to meet again in a potentially cold and moody setting to record our second EP 😊
