MOTEL VOID: You’re currently based in London, UK. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
LUCE RUSHTON: I live in South East London and I definitely feel like there is a real music community here. I think The Matchstick Piehouse and The Ivy House are the venues making this possible. Lots of people play for multiple projects so it’s very interwoven but at the same time very supportive and welcoming of new bands and projects.
MOTEL VOID: ‘Quickly’ is your new single (beautiful, by the way!) Will it be a part of your next record?
LUCE RUSHTON: Quickly is the second single from my upcoming debut EP which will be out in 2024!
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?
LUCE RUSHTON: I like to pick up ideas for lyrics day to day during conversations or when something comes to mind and I write them down. Then normally, I am playing guitar and find a riff or a set of chords I like and then I decide what the theme of the song is about by getting inspiration from the notes i’ve gathered or thinking about whatever is most on my mind. I then either take this to the band and they create parts to play live or I make a demo of the song with more instruments such as bass, keys parts, vocals and drum ideas. I then take the band or the demo to Joe Futak, who has produced all of my songs, and we work together to record the song.
MOTEL VOID: Who are your biggest music inspirations right now?
LUCE RUSHTON: My biggest inspirations at the minute are Big Thief and Adrianne Lenker, Shannon and the Clams, Mitski and Gwenno. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Scissor sisters as usual.
