MOTEL VOID: You’re from San Francisco, CA. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re a part of it?
WORTHITPURCHASE: So, I (Nicole) live in San Francisco, but Eric and Omar live in Los Angeles. The music scene here feels like it’s picking up the pieces in a lot of ways from 2020 and losing a lot of artists to other cities. Still, there’s lots of different scenes that are coming up and still a very healthy DIY movement happening. I’ve been following this collective called OUTHOUSE that throws lots of shows and events in the city, I’m a big fan of what they’re doing. We love Adobe Books and Martial Arts, too. Since we as a band are based in LA, I would definitely say that we are more-so intertwined in that scene, but Omar used to live here as well and we have some great friends in bands we always like to support and try to play with whenever we play bay area shows as well.
MOTEL VOID: You ‘met’ in 2015 on Soundcloud. Do you still use this platform? Could you describe this ‘Soundcloud’ collaboration?
WORTHITPURCHASE: I kind of have always and still use Soundcloud to find new exciting music from smaller artists and to post stuff I make for fun in my bedroom. I initially followed Omar on Soundcloud after a mutual friend reposted one of his tracks onto Tumblr back in the day. He followed me back, listened to some of my songs, and became huge fans of each other. He sent me this cover he recorded of a song I wrote and I knew immediately that I wanted to work with him, I’ve always been a huge fan of Omar and the perspective he brings. It’s a bummer that Soundcloud has such bad sound quality though…
MOTEL VOID: Really love your new single ‘Big Canada’! Could you tell us more about your current recording and writing process?
WORTHITPURCHASE: Thanks so much! It’s kind of always different, honestly. Sometimes we record things on our own and send tracks back and forth, sometimes we’re all together the whole way. The songs pretty much always come first, and then we work together to produce and record them. Lately we’ve been trying to do as much as we can in the same space but it’s definitely a challenge. Omar, Eric and I all have pretty different approaches to writing songs, and even I don’t really have a solid approach to it. We all are constantly jotting down lyrical ideas to use for later in notebooks. It’s a very iterative process.
MOTEL VOID: Will it be a part of your third album? When is it due?
WORTHITPURCHASE: Yes! Hopefully sometime next year.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans and goals for the rest of 2023? Any live shows ahead?
WORTHITPURCHASE: We don’t have any shows for the rest of 2023 but we’re currently in the final mixing phase of our new record. We played a lot of amazing shows this year and hope to play more next year, both home and away.
