INTERVIEW: SKI LIFT

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Wales (which city?). Do you currently live there? And how would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?

SKI LIFT: I come from the Welsh Marches. I grew up on the Welsh side of the border, in Knighton, Powys, for ten years, and then the English side, Herefordshire, during my teenage years. But for the past decade I have lived in London, where I met my bandmates. I live in Croydon now. The South London scene revolves around The Windmill, Brixton, an amazing venue where you’re free to try things out, and be who you want to be. In Croydon things are starting to happen, not least an amazing festival coming up in April called Cro Cro Land, featuring The Subways, Fightmilk, Noah and the Loners and loads more amazing artists.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a new single ‘Double Yellow’. Will it be part of your new record?

SKI LIFT: We’re keeping a lid on our future release plans for now, but there’s plenty more Ski Lift music coming your way in 2024 🙂

MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?

SKI LIFT: I (Benji) tend to do the writing, and then I bring a demo or idea to the rehearsal space and we workshop it. Adam (Fletcher) and Lizzy (Elizabeth Walsh) then bring their own unique styles and ideas to the table. This one was recorded with Patrick James Fitzroy at his cosy little studio at FOLD, Canning Town, and he really helped to bring it to life with his production. It’s also the first Ski Lift record to feature Lizzy on lead vocals.

MOTEL VOID: Your biggest music inspirations right now?

SKI LIFT: I have recently binged over 100 albums from 2023, and am absolutely swimming in inspiration! I loved the Jeff Rosenstock album HELLMODE, and Joanna Sterberg’s LP I’ve Got Me, in particular. Also the latest offerings from Being Dead and Sparks. Oh and Kylie’s latest record slaps, too.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?
SKI LIFT:
Write more songs than ever before. Play more shows and festivals. Enjoy the ride.
