MOTEL VOID: You’re from Chicago, Illinois. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
NO LONESOME: Chicago has an incredible breadth of talent. I feel super lucky to be surrounded by so many impassioned creatives. In the past few years I’ve spent a lot of my time also playing in local acts, Berta Bigtoe, Astrachan, and Smushie. We’ve built ourselves a lovely little collective of individuals that keeps expanding.
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?
NO LONESOME: I obviously love the other bands mentioned. But I highly recommend folks listen to friends and collaborators, Sarah Weddle, Aunt Kelly, Minor Moon, V.V. Lightbody, Pyzow!, Butthole, Joe Powers, and Family Junket. And as far as venues go— I of course have to highlight the Sleeping Village, locale of the “Cool Waters” release show.
MOTEL VOID: ‘Cool Waters’ is your brand new single. Will it be part of your debut album?
NO LONESOME: All I can say for now is that there is more to come.
Spotify: No Lonesome – Cool Waters
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?
NO LONESOME: These days I’ve been operating with a DIY type of approach. Lately, songwriting mostly happens with just voice and guitar. And then songs get fleshed out as I self record— actualizing what’s in my mind, trying different arrangements, and fucking around with sounds and recording methods. I tend to be a bit of an experimenter— using gear in ways they’re not built for and messing with a combination of digital and analog processing.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?
NO LONESOME: I’m kinda thinking of this single as the beginning of a new sonic era for No Lonesome. But maybe my head is up my ass and it all sounds the same. All the same, I feel a departure from what the previous EP sounded like as I follow my instincts more. I feel proud of how the new stuff is coming together.
