MOTEL VOID: Could you introduce your project in a few sentences?
JOSEPHINE FOSTER: The Childrenâs hour is a band I started with Andy Bar in 2001. we were a very laid back front porch duo but when David Pajo joined on drums we hit a sweet spot, and found our stride. thats why this record âGoing Homeâ is so wonderful to share, especially as it was almost as if the band had just begun when we recorded it. We all had different life paths that interrupted the release of this for over 20 years now, all the more beautiful that we can share this now.
DAVID PAJO: I played drums with them live and on this recording I played bass and drums.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?
JOSEPHINE FOSTER: Andy and I wrote the songs together, but many of these arrangements were inspired by the tour that brought us together with David. And his drum and bass contributions elevated the material to real pop songs to me. As a trio we found our focus and a more energetically expansive horizon. This album would not exist with out him, that’s for sure.
DAVID PAJO: Well, Josephine and Andy wrote the songs but I can talk about the recording. I can go on and on about it.
The crucial thing to know about this record is that it is a true lost albumââGoing Homeâ was recorded over two decades ago!
MOTEL VOID: Your biggest music inspirations right now?
DAVID PAJO: It changes month to month for me, it seems. This month I was inspired by Jon King (Gang of Four), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Barnaby Clayâs horror movie, The Seeding.
Oh yeah, and Steve Cropper (Booker T & the MGs). Always!
JOSEPHINE FOSTER: I am enjoying Iris Dement, a country singer who Iâd never really listened to until recently. Its cool hearing her sing with her mother. Some folk songs from Moravia, a nice record I found.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?
DAVID PAJO: Thatâs a great question and one I ask myself every day. I seem to always have planes in the air, looking for a place to land safely. The only thing carved in granite is to play live with Childrenâs Hour next month, which I am thrilled about!
JOSEPHINE FOSTER: lots of travel but the highlight will be these first three record release shows with the Childrenâs Hour. Practicing the songs makes me realize how special they are, I think they stand the test of time for sure. Canât wait to share this music live and gather with these dear old friends again.
