INTERVIEW: JOYER

MOTEL VOID: You’re based in New York. How would you describe the current indie music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?

JOYER (NICK SULLIVAN): New York is cool, there’s a lot of really great bands in a lot of different genres. It seems like a pretty potent shoegaze scene is starting to come up which is exciting. I’d like to think we’re part of the NY, or specially Brooklyn, music scene. I work at a venue here and fill in for some bands here and there, but Shane, the other half of Joyer, lives in Boston so we’re in and out of town a lot. Its definitely worth keeping an eye on what’s coming out of there, there’s a lot of great people and bands doing some awesome stuff.

MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend some of your favorite local venues and artists?

JOYER (NICK): Starcleaner Reunion is a big one for me right now. They’re originally from NJ like us so we’ve known them a long time and they make some amazing stuff. There’s another artist called The Cradle who’s an incredible song writer and super underrated. Also gotta shout out Docents, they’re a really sick band and their drummer is the star of a music video we have coming out soon.

MOTEL VOID: You are brothers. When did you first start writing music together?

JOYER (NICK): Its hard to say exactly when we started writing music together. I think Joyer itself started loosely in 2017 but we’ve always been super close and would jam together for fun for as long as I can remember.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a new single ‘Star’. Will it be part of your new record?

JOYER (NICK): Yup! ‘Star‘ is going to be featured on our new album ‘Night Songs‘ that’s coming out 4/26.

MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your new songs?

JOYER (NICK): Recording and writing is always really weird since Shane and I live in different states. It comes about in different ways every time. A lot of times we start coming up with some ideas separately and then eventually flush them out once we’re together or we’ll find some time to jam and see what comes out of it. Eventually we demo an entire album to make sure we like what we have and then bring it into a studio and re-record the whole thing professionally.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?

JOYER (NICK): We have a lot of tours and shows planned, the soonest being a run to SXSW and out to California for the first time which I’m really excited about. Then they’ll be some more stuff in the spring and summer that’s yet to be announced. We’ve also been writing a lot so hopefully we can track something new this year.
