MOTEL VOID: Could you introduce your band in a few sentences? If I’m not mistaken, you’re from Bologna, Italy… How would you describe the current indie music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?

SLEAP-E: Sleap-e is a meowpowertrio. Sleap-e is a bunch of loony devils who want to have fun. Sleap-e plays bossa cat-punk, which means you’ll listen to captivating, reckless and warm-hearted songs. We like the egg-punk attitude, but right now we’re too sweet to play that. We’re just kittens! We need to grow!

Yes, we live in Bologna. It is a small city, so you easily end up knowing everyone. The music scene is quite limited but lively, there is always something going on, and we are part of it for sure. I’m glad I was born here, but sometimes I feel a little bit spoiled, that’s why I have to go away. And that’s the magic of Bologna: people come and go, so there’s always variety.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released two new singles ‘no joke’ and ‘leave my bum alone’. Will they be part of your new record?

SLEAP-E: Yes, they will be part of 8106. And they’re two key songs of the album. They talk about the precious power enclosed in having fun. People may think having fun it’s just something random you do when you have time, or something that if you do too much, you’re wasting your time. But when it’s a matter of fun, I take it very seriously. There’s so much consciousness and self-worth in it. It is a way to reclaim yourself. You gotta fight for your right to party.

MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?

SLEAP-E: Well, the process is always the same: at the beginning I had these guitar+vocals songs, then I started to arrange them with my band. We recorded it in a week last summer at Bronson Club, in Ravenna. The place is so cool, plus that area of Ravenna looks like Louisiana, and I love Louisiana. Cause I love blues, crocodiles, and esotericism. Anyway, I’m glad I worked with beautiful and talented people. I really enjoyed it, the only thing I had to do was to focus on my songs. I’ve never felt so satisfied, I want to do this again as soon as possible.

MOTEL VOID:Your biggest inspirations right now?

SLEAP-E: Play-Doh. Electric blue. Small gigs. The sun.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?

SLEAP-E: We’re going on tour in May! Here in Italy, of course. Actually, we’ve already started playing some shows, and we’ll carry on throughout March, when we drop the album. Anyway, the plan is to play as much as possible. We’re planning to go abroad too. We’ll have fun, I want to grow and experience new things.
