INTERVIEW: SLOW CODE

MOTEL VOID: This year you’ve already released two great singles, the last one is called ‘Whale Eye’. Will they be part of your first album?

SLOW CODE: I’m kind of still focused on shaping the overall “slow code” sound one song at a time. Right now I’m treating each single also as an opportunity to experiment with new ideas, textures, instruments, and all of that, so I’m less worried about a universe bigger than those tracks as I’m making them. That said, if I turn around at some point soon and realize there’s a larger story that would make sense as an EP or even an LP, then I’d totally be open to that.

MOTEL VOID: In our last interview, you said that you don’t typically worry about your internet presence (which is true – I still don’t know where you are from!). Has this somehow changed recently?

SLOW CODE: I’m sorry if I didn’t mention where I’m from — I’m from the NY area originally, and I still live in Brooklyn. Didn’t mean to keep that a secret 😊 In terms of my internet presence, I’d really love if that could grow as organically as possible through the music itself. So, more because people like what they hear vs. the non-music things that I may or may not post. That said, I’ve got an Instagram, and to me that’s about enough right now, outside of all the music streaming platforms of course.

MOTEL VOID: In the last few years you became more interested in production. What kind of DAW do you use? Did you learn to produce music yourself?

SLOW CODE: Totally – I had played in bands my whole life and always had to rely on doing things old school – going to a studio, finding an engineer, having someone sit at a board, etc. So a bunch of years ago I just figured it was time for me to stop being scared of technology and just embrace the idea of producing myself, because ultimately it was going to let me do things the way I wanted, on my time, and working the way I needed to work to get to a sound. I use Ableton Live, and I probably will in some form for life, because I’m used to it and it’d be too much work to start from scratch and learn anything else. I will say, I’m a real believer in the idea that it doesn’t matter what tech you use, the tech is just a tool for you to get your ideas into the world.

MOTEL VOID: Do you also cooperate with other artists?

SLOW CODE: I’ve dabbled in some collaborations with Slow Code, but so far I’ve only released one track that features someone else. The track is “Strange Wings” and it features my friend who goes by the name “Float” doing a spoken word piece that he wrote on the bridge. Check it out.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for the rest of the year?

SLOW CODE: I’m already deep into the next track I’d like to release so I think it will pretty much be rinse and repeat after that one comes out, trying to refine my sound and hopefully continue to pick up a few people who dig it along the way.
