INTERVIEW: YONGE

YONGE is a bedroom/lo-fi pop project by Canadian musician Andrew Bisante.

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Canada, from which city? And how would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?

YONGE: Yes! I am from the suburbs of Toronto. The music scene here is incredible. We have so many talented artists doing amazing things. I do feel part of it in some way, although I’m not currently playing any shows I do like supporting friends that do.

MOTEL VOID: Your favorite local venues and artists?

YONGE: Favourite venue has to be Sneaky Dee’s. I feel like I grew up there, from going to shows upstairs to eating the nachos downstairs. The vibes in there are great.

My favourite local artist is probably my best friend Chris Larocca. He is insanely talented and he is the hardest working musician I know. He’s always inspiring me to keep going.

MOTEL VOID: Waiting is your debut single. Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs? And is YONGE your first music project ever?

YONGE: YONGE isn’t my first project. I’ve done other solo acoustic music before under my name Andrew Bisante as well as Deeprest, which was more indie R&B influenced.

My writing process is pretty simple for YONGE. This project is extremely personal to me so most of the lyrics are from my journal or just poems I’ve written in my phone. From there I’ll write the music on my guitar and then record using Ableton Live.

MOTEL VOID: You’re also a poet, a YouTube vlogger… what are your biggest inspirations right now?

YONGE: Lately I’ve been having a lot of fun just writing down my thoughts in a poetic way. Which is how YONGE was born. I don’t put pressure on myself to write a certain way. I just write how I feel and turn them into songs. It’s extremely therapeutic and so far I’ve been loving the sound that I’ve created. On the YouTube side of things, I’ve been making YouTube content for most of my life. I started in 2007 and it’s just always been a part of me. I’m on a little break from creating YouTube content right now so I can finish up the album of songs I’m working on.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for the rest of the year?

YONGE: Release the album, film some music videos, and keep writing poems and songs. It’s been about 4 years since I’ve released any music or even really worked on music so this has been great and I’m excited to keep going.
