MOTEL VOID: You’re from Italy: where exactly are you based, and how would you describe the current music scene there? What are your favorite local venues?
PLATONICK DIVE: We are based in Livorno, a seaside town in Tuscany. It’s a good place to live, always inspired by the sea and the breathtaking coast. When we were teenagers and we started the band, there was a really cool indie music scene. Nowadays things are pretty different and not in a better way.
MOTEL VOID: Your new single is called Anesthetic Analgesic, earlier this year you already released Carpet Ceiling, could you describe the writing and recording process behind these new tracks? Will they be part of your new record?
PLATONICK DIVE: Yeah, both track will be on the new album. Creating and recording this new album was a very intense moment, as musicians and as human beings. For the very first time, we took care of all the process, except for the mixing and the mastering. We are really satisfied on how the sound of this album is so real and so dynamic!
MOTEL VOID: You refer to yourselves as “sound researchers.” Can you elaborate on what this means for your creative process?
PLATONICK DIVE: Every album we made explored new paths. We don’t want to repeat ourselves as a band and being in a comfort zone is not our perfect zone. We do our best when we challenge ourselves.
MOTEL VOID: You started composing music as a “form of therapy”. Can you share how this approach has shaped the band’s evolution since your inception in 2010?
PLATONICK DIVE: Music is the radar of our lives, the point of reference in good and bad times. Like an anesthetic, a pain relief, a lifeline. Our meaning as a band is always making therapeutic music.
MOTEL VOID: You have shared the stage with artists like Explosions In The Sky, Blonde Redhead, Jon Hopkins, Four Tet… How have these experiences influenced your live performances?
PLATONICK DIVE: The big artists you mentioned inspired us for their artistry and their sound research, not much in live performance. We try to make our live performances as unique as possible.
MOTEL VOID: You’ve performed across Europe and the US, including SXSW. How would you compare performing in the US to performing in Europe?
PLATONIC DIVE: In US music is culture and entertainment. Everyone got a piano or guitar in their house. They live the music and the entertainment in a very special way. In Europe it is different but we played some of our best shows there, especially in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Poland.
MOTEL VOID: Are you Twin Peaks/David Lynch fans? I’m asking because your most successful song on Spotify is a Twin Peaks theme cover…
PLATONICK DIVE: We are really great fans of Twin Peaks and David Lynch’s art. We love trees, mountains, lakes, owls… and apple pies, of course! (Ahaha)
