INTERVIEW: MINERS

Australian trio Miners draw inspiration from a variety of places – the dreamy sounds of first wave shoegaze, the DIY approach of 90s college rock, and the catharsis of midwest emo. Their new LP ‘A Healthy Future On Earth’ is out October 28 on Kitty Records (AU) and Flesh & Bone Records (US).

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released your first single ‘Why Can’t I’ off your sophomore album ‘A Healthy Future On Earth’. What was the writing and recording process like?

MINERS: Like everything we make, it generally starts with an idea that comes while playing guitar and improvising, building parts up from there as they come. We try not to force things. Happy mistakes and limitations often play a big part in coming up with songs.

MOTEL VOID: You draw inspiration from a range of influences including the industrial and social decay of your hometown Wollongong. How has your hometown specifically shaped the sound and themes of this album?

MINERS: Wollongong is a place where not much happens really, which means people have to create their own fun, their own little worlds. Music has kept me out of the trouble that comes from being a directionless young person in this town.

MOTEL VOID: Do you have any favorite local venues and artists?

MINERS: Chimers, The Sevilles, Salmon 50, Expensive Music Band

MOTEL VOID: You work with two labels, Kitty Records in Australia and Flesh & Bone Records in the US. How is this international collaboration impacting the release and promotion of A Healthy Future On Earth?

MINERS: Well it’s early days yet but so far it’s helping us reach a lot more people than we ever could. Also introduced us to a lot of great like minded bands who are now our friends.

MOTEL VOID: Last year you played with one of my favorite bands, Cloud Nothings, how was it? And do you have any shows planned for the rest of the year?

MINERS: it was awesome playing with Cloud Nothings, we were heavily influenced and inspired by them in our early days of the band, so it was a dream come true. Really nice guys too. We have a show in a few days at a house party which is cool as we’ve never done one before, other than that we haven’t got anything booked, but early next year we plan to do a pretty substantial tour
