MOTEL VOID: As a Tulsa, Oklahoma native, how would you describe the local music scene? Are there any favorite venues or local artists you’re especially excited about?
KITCHEN SLUG: The Tulsa music scene is the most eclectic, and inspiring places to be! I’ve been involved with it since 2017. It’s always been growing, and you can always find music happening everyday in the week. We love Thelmas bar which started as a DIY backyard show and its grown so much. Whittier bar which has great for the Alt scene, The Vanguard, Mercury Lounge; to name a few more. I’ve made a lot of great friends in the last few years such as Greyland who are some younger cats doing bombastic things with guitars, Babies on a Halfpipe, Morris Village, Most Kudos, The Suzzies, and The Soup to name drop some great people pushing the needle forward.
MOTEL VOID: In August, you released Pieces, your third single of the year. Can you tell us if this track will be part of an upcoming debut album?
KITCHEN SLUG: We were just on a roll this year! We’ve been stockpiling a lot of songs and trying to figure out what we like, maybe dislike. We thought we might as well let some of them breathe and go out in the real world. This song will just live to be a stand alone single, likely.
MOTEL VOID: How do you approach writing and recording new music?
KITCHEN SLUG: Writing and recording can either be a quick and easy solution, or it can take forever. “Pieces” started out as a demo I whipped up a day before my girlfriend at the time was leaving to go to work in Arizona. We would try long distance. I always liked the song and how sentimental it seemed. but I could never finish it until earlier this year! I sat with a guitar and the chorus just came out, just maybe as a reflection of the things I’ve gone through since then. I took it to the band that following week and the song as you hear it came about pretty quickly. It helped that everyone involved were enthusiastic about it too.
MOTEL VOID: Who or what is currently your biggest source of inspiration?
KITCHEN SLUG: I’m a big softy about that 90’s/00 alternative revival that seems to be in full swing. It’s music that would play on the radio and the guitars were loud and there was an attitude that its indescribable. Deftones, early Slowdive, R.E.M, Oasis, -even the corny stuff, like Linkin Park and Creed for good measure. I also adore the writings of the Beatles, was a Lennon head growing up and as i got older i lean more toward George’s style. I also find inspiration by visual art, and a heavy dose of nostalgia
MOTEL VOID: What can fans look forward to for the rest of this year and into the next? Any plans or projects coming up?
KITCHEN SLUG: 2025 is gearing to be a cool one. We’ve got some friends in a band called Cryhard whos gearing up something special that we are apart of as early as February. Were fixing to get an EP in the Springtime so i can let some older tunes out and start nailing some new ones. We’re stoked:)
