MOTEL VOID: Last month, you released your debut album Silver Meteor 98, and it’s already approaching 1 million streams on Spotify. How do you feel about the reception so far?

MILA DEGRAY: wow i mean that’s insane. i think people were just happy to get some new music after baiting them for about two years haha. i know i can definitely do better and excited for the second album. sonically going to be a lot more polished but still me.

MOTEL VOID: Can you walk us through the writing and recording process for this album?

MILA DEGRAY: three years of many producers messing with them around the world. i usually do remote sessions because i like recording vocals alone in my room with this shitty mic i got for $100 when i was 16, it just gives it character and it’s easier for me to sing unapologetically when it’s just me in the room, gotta get better at that.

MOTEL VOID: The album was recorded over a long period—for instance, “Skinny Brittle Bones” was first released as a single back in 2021. Did your approach to creating music evolve during that time?

MILA DEGRAY: yeah it went from horrible garageband demo sounding songs to actual cohesive songs with great sounding instruments. im still so proud of skinny brittle bones, even now.

MOTEL VOID: Who or what would you say has been your biggest source of inspiration throughout this journey?

MILA DEGRAY: hmmmmmm, many things inspire me but honestly the main source of inspiration comes from making my family proud as well as my self. for me this is it or i don’t want anything else, so it has to happen.

MOTEL VOID: What are your plans for the coming year?

MILA DEGRAY: second album is gonna start to be produced with richard orofino. i’ve never had one solid producer for one project but i feel like he understands my vision really well, he also helps me feel comfortable singing in the studio and not alone in my room. moving back to new york in january. assembling the band in the city and rehearsing and doing little gigs til my first headliner show in late march, a lot of sick things being planned! i’m so tired of being in florida which is where i’ve been for the past year and i’m ready to start working.
