Frans Asthma is easily one of my favorite lo-fi musicians, and we’ve recommended his work on this blog multiple times before. His October release light rail / one way route (featuring an adorable cat on the cover) is yet another gem.
One way route is built around a minimal, loop-like riff and a vocal delivery that feels more like conversational storytelling. It conjures the feeling of waking up in a sprawling city on a freezing morning, where everything is muted yet alive. There’s a spoken-word quality to it, almost verging on rap, and it faintly reminds me of tracks like Lil Peep’s gym class.
Midway through, the song slows down, shifting into a hypnotic and repetitive groove with an entrancing melody and when paired with viscera corps, which closes out this song beautifully, it makes for a stunning lo-fi experience.
The single also features the track light rail, which carries a similar mood—melancholic, emotional, and enriched by a beautiful guitar riff and a somber vocal melody.
In the second third, the song takes a turn, building toward a moving climax. This shift adds a dynamic layer, showcasing Frans Asthma’s evolving artistry and depth.
It’s clear that Frans Asthma is growing as a musician, and I can’t wait to hear what he delivers on a full-length album.
