REVIEW: NIKO ROSE – SOFTHEAT

Niko Rose has appeared on Motel Void a few times, and his music ranks among the best the genre has to offer. To be honest, I’m not sure how to define the genre precisely—terms like indie folk, bedroom pop, and lo-fi feel overused at this point. Perhaps the best way to convey the vibe is to mention artists like Hovvdy, Fog Lake, or Alex G, who come to mind when listening to his work.

“Softheat” is the opening track from his new album Jamie gloo*, a compact collection of 8 tracks spanning just 15 minutes. Like the majority of the album, “softheat” is a perfect bite-sized piece—featuring a beautiful, straightforward guitar riff, warm and natural production, and a fantastic vocal performance. It’s a voice that seamlessly blends melancholy, melody, sadness, and intimacy into something very captivating.

In the realm of “under two-minute” songs, it’s hard to find something better than this.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
