INTERVIEW: ADIOS BANGLADESH

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a few new singles—Cathy’s Bday, Storm Windows, and Petals. Could you tell us about the writing and recording process? Will these tracks be part of your new album?

ADIOS BANGLADESH: Cathy’s Bday, Storms, and Petals (collectively known as the bolinas ep) all started out as acoustic voice memos that I sent to Chad during the height of Covid. Chad worked out some vocal ideas for all three songs, and then they sat for a few years collecting dust while life got in the way. There was a failed attempt to record a more realized version of Cathy in Chad’s home studio. There was some thought of turning Storm Windows into a full on rock song with another outfit of ours, McCloud. For Petals, I honestly forgot that one even existed. At some point between Covid and now, Chad had an epiphany when he stumbled upon some old recordings we made as kiddos while he was cleaning out his attic. Eric, he said, instead of recording proper versions of these songs, which we will never get around to doing, let’s release these dusty ole voice memo versions, warts and all, into the world as is. So, some bells and whistles were added, but we made sure to keep the 4-track vibe intact.

MOTEL VOID: Who or what is your biggest inspiration right now?

ADIOS BANGLADESH: Inspiration wise, while Chad just made it a point to tell me he doesn’t listen to much new music these days, I am all over the place given the day of the week. Recently, I’ve been kinda doomsday-y and depressed with the current state of the world, so I’ve honestly just been trying to listen to whatever gives me a sense of peace and comfort during these weird, wild times. This week, it’s been my love of old Spiritualized records, specifically Let it Come Down, as well as Bill Fay’s album, Who is the Sender?. Both have been able to quiet the noise in my head to focus on what’s important.

MOTEL VOID: Where exactly are you from? I couldn’t find much information about you online, to be honest! Is this your first project ever, or have you worked on other music before?

ADIOS BANGLADESH: We are both from a lil town right down the interstate from New Orleans, LA called Slidell. We both currently reside in different other cities right down the interstate from New Orleans, LA. Chad and I have played music together for over 25 years at this point, and have no intentions of ever stopping. We’ve played in two other bands together throughout our existence. One being the post rock outfit, Always the Runner from around 2002 to 2006ish. The other being the rock band, McCloud, which is still in existence, albeit in fits and spurts when schedules allow. McCloud just released a new album, Look Behind You, which we are very proud of. I also have a solo instrumental acoustic outfit, Coyote Concerns, and Chad has a solo outfit called Sun the Silent Killer. In conclusion, we have about 50 different bands, whose combined effort and output rivals that of maybe one serious band.

MOTEL VOID: Are there any local venues or artists you’d recommend?

ADIOS BANGLADESH: Our days of being immersed in the local music scene have long since passed us by. Personally, I love Tipitinas, which is kind of our legendary rock/blues/jazz club that looks exactly the same today as it did when I saw some of my favorite bands there in college (Dismemberment Plan, Afghan Whigs, Yo La Tengo). I don’t listen to a lot of traditional New Orleans bands or music, but there is a handful of bands off the beaten path here that I dig. Early Day Miners, Not Exotic, Butte, to name a few.

MOTEL VOID: Do you have any plans to tour in support of your new songs?

ADIOS BANGLADESH: Lastly, while we certainly won’t rule out the occasional show in the future if the right situation arises, we have never played live as Adios Bangladesh. I honestly kind of enjoy that that’s not even part of the equation. We’re just two life long friends who enjoy making music when the wives and kids let us. We are, however, sitting on about 20 or so ideas for new songs. While we take our damn time, I feel confident that another 3 song ep will make its way into the world in 2025!
