BEST NEW TRACKS: Brood22, Milk Knife, Coyote Concerns

The best tracks that have come my way in the past week or so and that I highly recommend listening to…

Brood22 – funnel web

Brood22 is a new project hailing from Portland, Oregon, and their new track funnel web brought me genuine joy. It’s a slow, melancholic slowcore song, marked by warm, organic production where two whispering voices – one deeper, one higher (or perhaps just one layered vocal) – gently intertwine. The hypnotically beautiful guitar work calls to mind early Modest Mouse, with its subtle, emotional pull. This is exactly the kind of music I love – music there can never be too much of. Brood22 also released an EP this year titled no good at introductions, which I’ll be diving into soon – and you should too!

Milk Knife – Comb

Comb is the latest single from Paige Paton, a musician and photographer based in Hamilton, Canada, who performs under the name Milk Knife. Her inspirations include Grouper, Alex G, and Florist – and it’s the latter that Comb most closely resembles instrumentally. What seems at first like simple acoustic picking is actually rich with layered textures, noise elements, and an intriguingly diverse production. The vocals are not conventionally sweet; instead, they’re raw and unpolished, at times reminiscent of Grouper’s shadowy tones. It all lends the track a darker, more haunting atmosphere. A truly excellent song.

Coyote Concerns – victory lapse

Back in early March, New Orleans-based project Coyote Concerns released a gorgeous instrumental guitar track titled victory lapse. Featuring raw, minimalist acoustic fingerpicking and lo-fi production, the song creates a hypnotic atmosphere that’s effortlessly soothing. It runs just under four minutes, gradually building into a noisier, more ambient soundscape. I’ve listened to it several times in the early morning hours, accompanied by the distant song of a blackbird and a chiffchaff – an unexpectedly great pairing!
