INTERVIEW: WEDDING

MOTEL VOID: You released your new EP sitka in July. Can you tell us more about your writing and recording process?

WEDDING: the sitka EP is actually just the four singles from my upcoming album “7 songs for tree climbing” coming out on August 8 – writing and recording 7 songs for tree climbing was very much an exercise in textural exploration – actively attempting to expand my palate as a producer beyond the ordinary guitar bass drums and synths I’ve resorted to in my previous recordings under Wedding – using richer textures to convey the ambiguity and thematic inconsistency of my writing (samples of a hybrid car, cello, trumpet, hand claps, pedal steel). these are the most collaborative Wedding recordings by far, since I’ve been playing live with the same band for about 2 years now and I wanted the fingerprint of our live performances all over the record.

MOTEL VOID: You’re based in Toronto. How would you describe the current indie scene there? Do you feel like you’re part of it?

WEDDING: I love the indie scene in Toronto – lots of amazing projects happening in the underground – i run a concert series out of my garage called The Gongshow – we host shows biweekly that feature many local young musicians experimenting with their artistic voice in front of an audience – I’m constantly blown away and energized by watching my friends perform and develop themselves as artists.

MOTEL VOID: Do you have any favorite local venues or artists in Toronto?

MOTEL VOID: best underground Toronto projects: Potions (freak folk), Himalayan Pink (slow and sexy indie), Thank God For The Rain (jazzy The Sea and Cake-inspired rock), Sslug (grungy slowcore indie), C’est La Fête (free jazz), Taeo (indie folk), Crystal Sting (improvised vibraphone modular synth mayhem), Tractor Beam (Galaxie 500 meets Mac Demarco)

MOTEL VOID: What kind of music inspired your new EP the most?

WEDDING: a couple musicians that come to mind: Blake Mills, Alex G, Broadcast, King Krule, Chanel Beads – a couple non-musical: friends, the winter, addiction, coffee

MOTEL VOID: Are you planning to tour with the new material? What shows do you have coming up?

WEDDING: we just completed the Ontario / Quebec leg of the summer tour to support the record, we’re heading out to BC at the end of August to play a few more shows to finish off the tour.
