BEST NEW TRACKS: DEVIN SHAFFER ☆ WEIRS ☆ PLANER

The best tracks that have come our way in the past week or so and that we highly recommend listening to…

DEVIN SHAFFER – ALL MY DREAMS ARE COMING TRUE

New York–based musician Devin Shaffer is preparing the release of their debut album Patience, from which the tender track All My Dreams Are Coming True is taken. Written between 2021 and 2023, during Shaffer’s move from Chicago to New York City, Patience reflects the highs and lows of searching for deeper meaning, purpose, and connection. All My Dreams Are Coming True fuses biting sarcasm with an upbeat folk-rock backdrop – recalling the slower songs of Big Thief, while also evoking the raw intimacy of early Soccer Mommy. A truly delightful track that leaves us eager for the full record. We also highly recommend the beautiful analog (I suppose?!) video.

WEIRS – I WANT TO DIE EASY

Weirs is an experimental collective rooted in central North Carolina’s music scene – a space that sits somewhere between old-time tradition and DIY noise. Non-hierarchical by design, past Weirs performances have featured anywhere from two to twelve members. Their folk take has thankfully become more present in recent years – similar in spirit to some of my favorites like Lankum, Shovel Dance Collective, or Timber Rattle. Weirs weave hypnotic, ancient-feeling chants with echoes of Fleet Foxes–like melodies. The a cappella voices build a powerful atmosphere, enhanced by the inclusion of natural sounds, as if you were listening at sunset beside an old farmhouse by the water.

PLANER – SATISFIED

Emerging from the industrial heart of Minneapolis, Planer shape soundscapes that merge the thick, heavy atmosphere of shoegaze with the expansive dynamics of post-rock. Their influences include Deftones but also Dinosaur Jr. – the latter shining through most clearly in the vocals, which is exactly what drew me in. The singing is memorable and distinct, not only because of the timbre but also due to its lethargic, almost weary mood, all while remaining deeply emotive. The instrumental side is just as impressive – guitars at times evoke the spirit of ’90s slacker rock, reminiscent of early Modest Mouse. A truly striking track that I believe would sound even better live, played loud and at full force.
