Globally acclaimed Love Ghost return with their new album Gas Mask Wedding — a collection of love songs wrapped in a dark, dystopian atmosphere. These are songs about finding intimacy amid chaos and learning to love something that could destroy you. The album flirts with a wide range of genres, drawing from RnB to grunge, yet despite its stylistic leaps it feels remarkably cohesive – and, above all, irresistibly catchy.
The record opens with Car Crash, a piano ballad that sets an emotional tone and immediately shows Love Ghost’s strength in modern, fresh production. The clean, expressive vocals fit perfectly, and when the electric guitar joins in, the track gains momentum, ending in a pop-tinged, subtly epic finale — a brilliant start.
Next comes Scrapbook – as well as the tenth track Worth It – a collaboration with The Skinner Brothers. Scrapbook is far more energetic than the opener, mixing raw pop-punk energy with trap influences — a powerful combination that recalls the emotional grit of Lil Peep’s best work.
FUCKED UP FEELINGS leans more toward RnB, wrapped in a darker, melancholic tone. Then Left on Read — a collaboration with Mexico’s Wiplash — dives back into pop-punk, a genre where Love Ghost truly shine. The rap interlude only fuels its fiery energy, making it easy to imagine this track igniting a packed club.
Scar Tissue isn’t a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover, but a lo-fi, trap-infused anthem steeped in raw emotion. Love Ghost channel the spirit of Lil Peep again here, conveying pain and vulnerability in a way that feels unfiltered and human.
A pleasant surprise follows with Sandcastles, a high-energy anthem featuring Smash Mouth’s Zach Goode, blending nostalgia with California sunshine. It’s the most accessible moment on the record – at times evoking a mix of 60s surf rock and Weezer. A similar mood carries through Hallucinations, a dreamy collaboration with Reverie.
The hidden gem of the album might be Angelic, a stripped-down acoustic ballad — slow, fragile, and deeply emotional, recalling the melancholic intimacy of Elliott Smith. The main album closes with the more electronic Spirit Box, but listeners are treated to four bonus tracks. Among them, Falling Down stands out with its dreamy, shoegaze-like chorus, while the short trap banger SOVIET GHOST and the hazy, lo-fi closer The Masochist both offer a compellingly atmospheric finish. The Masochist stands out with its subtle, understated production – the vocals feel distant, almost fading into the background, creating a dreamlike, atmospheric soundscape.
With Gas Mask Wedding, Love Ghost embrace chaos and vulnerability in equal measure. It’s a bold, genre-blending record that captures both the darkness of modern life and the stubborn hope that love — even in ruin — still matters.
