There is never enough slowcore rooted in bands like Duster. Gabe Crawford comes from South Carolina and released a five-track EP in November with the slightly bizarre title endless toilet 1.

The opening track rain boy comes from this release, and it carries the familiar haziness of the aforementioned Duster recordings, unfolding in a lethargic, unhurried atmosphere. While listening, I was strongly reminded of Charlie Kaufman’s film I’m Thinking of Ending Things. Strange images, a long drive through a snow-covered landscape, fields slipping by outside the car window – that’s exactly what rain boy evokes for me. The repetitive riff lodged itself deep in my head, and Crawford’s whispered vocals fit the song perfectly.
