BEST NEW TRACKS: UNTITLED FREAK – BIRTHDAY

Wow β€” this is easily one of my biggest discoveries of the year so far. Untitled Freak was a completely unknown project to me until now, with only two songs currently available on streaming platforms (though there are clear connections to the well-established band Laveda).

Birthday immediately grabbed me with its gritty, slightly dirty sound that brings to mind Sonic Youth around the Washing Machine era. I love the song’s effortlessness and rawness – the moment the riff kicks in and the drums follow shortly after, I knew this track had me hooked. The vocal delivery is understated yet deeply emotional, stripped down to the bone, casually carrying a highly memorable, almost whispered melody. Everything revolves around a simple but powerful riff that holds the whole song together.

Sometimes, truly great music leaves me short of words, and this is one of those cases. Three minutes of a genuinely compelling listening experience – this is exactly the kind of music that feels ideal to me, where grit, rawness, and melody come together in perfect balance!
