BEST NEW TRACKS: THE NOTWIST – X-RAY + HOW THE STORY ENDS

The German band The Notwist are among the true legends of indie electronica, and it’s hard to imagine many fans of the genre who haven’t come across their cult classic Neon Golden (which includes the massive hit Consequence!)

This time, they return with a new album titled News from Planet Zombie, set for release on Morr Music in mid-March. Recorded at their home base in Munich, it is also the first studio album since 1995’s 12 that the band recorded together in the studio in their expanded live formation.

We’re recommending two singles from the album straight away. The first one, X-Ray, immediately makes it clear – sonically – that this record sounds rich, organic, and truly “full-band.” Despite a certain rawness, it retains that signature indie warmth, enhanced by dreamy backing vocals. Personally, it reminded me most of some of my favorite albums by The Decemberists.

Even higher on my list, though, is the subtly hit-leaning How the Story Ends, which opens with an emotional and instantly catchy melody. The track carries an almost oppressive, heavy atmosphere, paired with a restless vocal performance captured in a beautifully natural way. At times the vocal gently pulls back in the mix, at others it comes forward, giving the song an organic, breathing quality. The track builds gradually, and the intertwining vocals provide a truly gorgeous ending.
