Canadian artist performing under the name Dipper has been featured here before. This time, he returns with a new EP, Waiting Room, recorded entirely on a Proscan cassette recorder. We’re highlighting the track Winter’s Call.
The song opens with a lo-fi acoustic fingerpicking pattern, gradually joined by Dipper’s voice, which immediately evokes the delicate intimacy of Jackson C. Frank or Nick Drake. Perhaps it’s the charm of this type of recording, but the EP as a whole recalls those timeless folk recordings from the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Winter’s Call is a simple, almost monotone song, yet it carries a surprising depth of emotion, imagination, and beauty. Its minimalism allows every note and every subtle inflection in the voice to resonate.
