Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys are an art-pop, ambient-noise band based in Berlin. Fronted by South African-born artist Lucy Kruger, the group creates music filled with atmosphere and emotional intensity. After releasing the third and final album of the Tapes Trilogy in April 2022 and touring extensively, the band has shifted its focus to the upcoming album Heaving, scheduled for release this April.
Damp is already the fourth single from the forthcoming record, following Anchor, Ambient Heat, and Woolf. Personally, although I fell in love with the previous singles, this one might be the strongest so far. Running close to six minutes, Damp is the longest single released from the album to date. The accompanying video is captivating in its eerie atmosphere, gradually unfolding into a hypnotic instrumental passage driven by a prominent bass line.
When Lucy Kruger’s vocals finally enter, the mood evokes, for me, the final albums of David Bowie (Blackstar) or Anna von Hausswolff. Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys are masters of crafting immersive sonic landscapes, and the extended runtime suits them perfectly. “I’ve got a breakdown scheduled in the basement, baby it’s just down these stairs… I’m just like the rest, I just wanna rest this head,” Kruger sings during the song’s most powerful moment.
