Oh, this is an absolutely stunning track. d. inver (Route 500) has a voice that seems perfectly attuned to this slowcore-leaning, melancholic, and unhurried musical landscape. We truly can’t recommend his new track the peaks highly enough.
For the first two minutes, the peaks lingers in a lethargic, almost monochromatic instrumental space, evoking artists I admire, such as Jason Molina or 40 Watt Sun. Floating above this restrained backdrop is d. inver’s sorrow-tinged vocal, which beautifully balances melodic sensitivity with raw fragility. When, about a minute and a half in, his voice briefly rises into a higher register, the effect is mesmerizing.
Subtle, nearly hidden sonic textures gradually push the song forward, building tension almost imperceptibly. In its final third, the track swells into something both epic and desolate, as layered vocals overlap and almost cry over one another in a chilling conclusion. Magnificent.
