Snowcuffs is a Chicago dream pop/shoegaze band we’re quite fond of on our blog! Their inspirations include the usual suspects such as Mazzy Star, Beach House, and Alvvays. Formed in 2022, they’ve already racked up a solid list of achievements, including sharing the stage with Seashine and Cigarettes for Breakfast.
A few days ago (March 5), they released a very strong four-track EP Sweet Gravity. From it, we especially recommend the songs from the second half of the record: Sunless and Cold Memories. The first of these feels wonderfully sunlit and fits perfectly with the first days of spring. It immediately grabs you with an energetic beat and bright, shimmering guitars. It’s a very playful track, instrumentally rich and carefully arranged, elevated even further by an excellent vocal performance that carries a beautiful sense of nostalgia. It’s rare to hear a vocal this strong in this genre!
The closing track Cold Memories moves from that sunny March afternoon into a darker night, when the temperature drops back toward freezing and you find yourself walking through nearly empty streets. At over five minutes long, the song feels more expansive and epic, and the vocal delivery becomes more urgent. Yet the color of the voice still conveys a sense of hope rather than despair. And the melody near the end — where the title of the EP appears — is truly wonderful, recalling the finest moments of the Brittish band Daughter.
