Ugly Moon is the musical project of songwriting brothers Matt and Mike Mowry, bassist Johnny McMahon, and drummer Ian McMillan. If you enjoy well-crafted, slightly old-school indie rock with folk roots, this is definitely for you.
God Is a Ghost is the opening track from their recent self-titled second album. Atmospherically, the song reminds me in some ways of recordings by my favorites Sebadoh or Pedro the Lion.
The track unfolds beautifully: the first half feels darker, with a vocal delivery that carries a deeper register and a subtle Tom Waits–like vibe. Halfway through, however, the song shifts and a vocal in a higher register takes over, expanding the melody with a new layer of emotion – this time more openly vulnerable and expressive. A truly powerful and moving song.
