If I have a soft spot for anything, it’s for songs that carry a kind of timeless atmosphere – tracks that feel almost ritualistic, nearly sacred (and that I can best imagine hearing in a striking setting like a church). That’s exactly the case with the Danish project Saltmother and their new song Maaske, which embodies these deeper qualities and virtues.
The track runs close to five minutes and is driven primarily by vocals that remind me of some of my favorite acts, like Shovel Dance Collective. Instrumentally, it remains minimal – a lightly distorted guitar playing repetitive riffs – yet that simplicity is more than enough to create a deeply mesmerizing, immersive experience.
