Nausicaa are an alt-rock/shoegaze trio from Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. I’ve always had a soft spot for Australian bands – it often feels like music coming out of that continent has something just a little extra compared to elsewhere. Though in this case, I might have guessed the band came from somewhere deep in the forests of Oregon or Washington!
Their latest release, Ultraviolet, opens with guitar feedback and a striking riff that brings to mind early Smashing Pumpkins, but its velvety vocals also echo less noisy, more atmosphere-driven acts like Mazzy Star. That sense of atmosphere is further enhanced by the song’s captivating video. Nausicaa take a completely DIY approach – recording, filming, and producing all their material with the help of just a few close friends – which feels genuinely admirable in this day and age, and something I really appreciate!
