I hadn’t come across the music of Ryan O’Connell before – and that’s a real shame! Based in Atlanta, he has a remarkable instinct for melody, drawing inspiration from the early work of Beck as well as the poetry of David Berman – after whom this blog is, in fact, named. That’s a combination I’m always happy to encounter.
Musically, the track is fairly energetic, opening on a lighter, almost playful note. The verse introduces a melodic line that might be my favorite moment of the song. From there, though, it takes a darker turn – growing heavier, more unsettling, even faintly depressive. But the transformation works beautifully!
