MOTEL VOID: You’re from Chicago, IL. How would you describe the current ‘indie’ music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
CRAWLING VINES: The indie music scene in Chicago is fantastic! There are so many artists and bands around which makes throwing a bill together for a show streamlined. I would say Crawling Vines has definitely made some noise in the DIY-scene, as we’ve played our fair share of shows here, and we have so many wonderful, supportive musicians who are always down to play with us. We are basically the only band back on our campus at Northern Illinois University, so we’ve made a decent name for ourselves out in DeKalb.
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend your favorite local artists and venues?
CRAWLING VINES: Some of my favorite local artists are Post Animal and Scarlet Demore. They’re fantastic both live and in the studio. Another one of my favorites is Tommy Oeffling. His music is insanely good, although he’s based in Milwaukee so I don’t know if I’d call him ‘local.’ As far as venues, Bookclub, Beat Kitchen, Reggies, and Sub T are all amazing indie spots in the city. One of our favorite shows was at a place called The Mirror in Urbana, IL. Those college kids know how to party!
MOTEL VOID: I love your new single ‘Kewpid’. Will it be a part of your new album?
CRAWLING VINES: Kewpid is probably our favorite track as well. If not an LP, we will definitely be adding it to an upcoming EP 😉
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the writing and recording process?
CRAWLING VINES: The bulk of the writing is done solely by me, Jack, and then the other members of Vines help translate the songs live. I’d say our live sound is a bit heavier than what’s heard from the studio, so seeing us live is a must! I do the recording with a hodgepodge of vintage analog gear in my home studio.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans and goals for the rest of the year?
CRAWLING VINES: For the rest of the year I plan to release music on a regular basis—As a way to build up the fanbase. Longterm, I’d love to play on Audiotree as they’re based in Chicago. I think that high fidelity recording would do wonders for our band’s atmosphere.
